Janaki Jayanti 2024 : Story

According to mythology, Maa Sita was the reincarnation of a woman named Vedavati. Vedavati was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and she wanted to have him as her husband.
Therefore, to please Lord Vishnu, Vedavati performed severe penance. It is said that one day Ravana was passing by the place where Vedavati was doing penance and seeing the beauty of Vedavati, Ravana became fascinated by her.
Ravana asked Vedavati to accompany him but Vedavati refused to accompany him. When Vedavati refused, Ravana got angry and wanted to misbehave with Vedavati.
As soon as Ravana touched her, Vedavati burnt herself to ashes and cursed Ravana that she would be born as Ravana’s daughter and would be the cause of his death.
After some time Mandodari gave birth to a girl. But fearing the curse of Vedavati, Ravana threw the girl into the ocean as soon as she was born.
After which Varuni, the goddess of the ocean, handed over the girl to the earth’s goddess Prithvi and Prithvi handed over the girl to King Janak and Maa Sunaina.
There was once a famine in Mithila. Then King Janak was advised that if he performed the Vedic rituals and plowed the fields himself, it would rain and the famine would end.
On the ninth date of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month, King Janak was plowing his field when suddenly his plow got stuck at a place in the field and despite many efforts he could not get out.
When King Janak removed the soil from the place where the plow was stuck, he found a girl there. As soon as the girl emerged from the earth, it suddenly started raining.
King Janak named this girl Sita. He accepted Sita as his daughter. As soon as Sita arrived in Mithila, happiness returned there. After this people started living happily.
Sita was not born from her mother’s womb. She was obtained from the earth, hence she is also called the daughter of the earth.
After which King Janak raised Sita and got her married to Shri Ram. Then during the exile Ravana kidnapped Sita due to which Shri Ram Ji killed Ravana and thus Maa Sita became the reason for Ravana’s killing.
