People who worship Shiva usually worship him in the form of Linga. Even in temples, they worship Shiva Lingam as Lord Shiva. Why Lord Shiva is not worshiped in the form of Shiva but worshiped in the form of Linga? Shivlinga is a combination of Shiva and Shakti.
There is no Shakti without Shiva, similarly, there is no Shiva without Shakti. Therefore, Lord Shiva, the creator of the universe, Praparirumman is the form of Shiva Shakti in which Shiva and Shakti are combined.
So they do not worship Shiva in a separate form but in the form of Shiva Shakti Linga. Parvati and Shiva never have separate forms. Half of his body is Parvati.
There are four types of Shiva Lingams. The first among them is the ‘Asala Lingam’ which is worshiped in temples. The Shiva Lingam enshrined in the temples is also called ‘Parartha Lingam’.
It is of five types namely Swayambu Lingam, Kanana Lingam, Taivika Lingam, Arida Lingam, and Manudalingam.

Among them, Swayambu Lingam is the self-made one. Kanalingam was established by Lord Shiva’s sons like Vinayagar and Lord Muruga. Taivika Lingams are those established by Lord Vishnu and other Devas.
Arida Lingams are established by Rishi sages. They are also established by some Rakshasas and Asuras. Those established by humans are called Manuda Lingams. Even the temple gopurams are called Dhula Lingam.
The second type of Shiva Lingam is the ‘Calana Lingam’ which is worshiped as Ishta Lingam by thinking of an image of Shiva Lingam in the heart.
The third type of Shiva Lingam is the ‘Asalachal Lingam’ which is worshiped in homes.
The fourth type is the Kanalingam known as ‘Salachala Lingam’ and the Lingams of Navarathanas.
Shiva Puja cannot and should not be performed by everyone. It has many restrictions. There are two types of pujas. Daily pujas are usually done at home and pujas are done after receiving deets from the second guru.
