PM Modi inaugurates world longest tunnel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has today inaugurated the world’s longest tunnel ‘Sela Tunnel‘ in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. Now with the help of the world’s longest double-lane tunnel, people will save 90 minutes in traveling time.

This Sela Tunnel has been constructed by the Border Roads Organization. They operate at altitudes above 13,000 feet.

Advantage of world longest Sela tunnel

  • With the help of Sela Tunnel, connectivity will increase in every season.
  • This tunnel will reduce the distance by 12 km between Tawang and Dirang in West Kameng district of Arunachal. As a result, 90 minutes of time will be saved.
  • This tunnel is to facilitate rapid military deployment in Tawang and Kameng areas of Arunachal Pradesh along the China border. Therefore, this is also a very good facility from the point of view of national security purpose.
  • This Sela Tunnel ensures rapid deployment of troops and heavy weapons including artillery guns from 4 Corps Headquarters to Tawang in the plains of Assam.
  • Sela Tunnel is the longest double-lane tunnel in the world. Whose cost is Rs 825 crore. This is a wonderful example of India’s infra development.
  • Sela Tunnel mainly consists of 2 tunnels. Whose length is 1,595 meters and 1,003 meters respectively. This project has both T1 and T2 tubes.
  • The tunnel has 8.6 kilometers of access and link roads. It consists of the T2 long tube, spanning 1,594.90 metres. It is along the parallel tunnel.
  • The cella tunnel is designed to facilitate escape in case of cave-in.
  • According to TOI, this tunnel uses the new Austrian tunneling method. It integrates top-notch security features.
  • The Sela Tunnel is equipped with ventilation system, strong lighting system and fire fighting system.
  • The capacity of this tunnel is to accommodate daily passage for 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks.
  • The Sela Tunnel provides all-weather connectivity to Tawang through the Sela Pass on the Balipara-Charidwar-Tawang (BCT) road in Arunachal Pradesh.

In the ‘Developed India, Developed Northeast’ program here, PM Modi said that development work is going on four times faster in the entire North-East.
