Magh Purnima 2024: Story

According to the legend, a Brahmin named Dhaneshwar lived in Kantika Nagar. He used to ask for dakshina and donations for his livelihood. Despite extreme poverty, both husband and wife were happy in their own little world.

The only thing that saddened both the Brahmin and his wife was that they had no children. One day his wife went to the city to beg for alms, but since she had no children, everyone refused to give her alms, which broke her heart and made her feel very sad and depressed.

Seeing his sorrow and trouble, someone asked him to worship Goddess Kali for 16 days. The Brahmin couple worshiped Maa Kali for 16 consecutive days.

Seeing his penance and rigorous devotion, Goddess Kali blessed him and gave a boon to the Brahmin’s wife that she would become pregnant and she became pregnant.

But, the Brahmin’s wife was told to light one lamp on every full moon as per her capacity and keep adding one more lamp on every full moon.

Thus, he should increase the number of lamps every full moon until he has at least 32 lamps. The Brahmin plucked raw mango fruit from the tree for his wife’s worship.

His wife performed the puja as a result of which she became pregnant. She used to light a lamp on every full moon day as per the instructions of Mother Kali. By the grace of Mother Kali, a son was born, who was named Devdas.

When Devdas grew up, he was sent to Kashi to study at his maternal uncle’s house. An accident happened to the mother and nephew in Kashi, due to which Devdas got married fraudulently.

Devdas did not want to marry so he requested to stop this marriage as he was young but still he was forced to marry.

After some time, Yamraj came in the form of Kaal to take his life, but on that day the Brahmin couple had observed a fast on the full moon day, so Kaal could not harm Devdas. Since then it is said that by fasting on the day of Maghi Purnima, one gets relief from all troubles and all the wishes are fulfilled.
