Phalgun Amavasya 2024: Katha
According to the legend, due to the curse of sage Durvasa, Indra and other gods became weak and were defeated by the demons. Then all the gods together went to Lord Vishnu and presented their views before him.
Lord Vishnu advised him to churn the ocean of milk along with others and extract nectar. Then all the gods made a pact with the leaders and started churning to extract the nectar.
As soon as the Amrit Kumbh started, on the instructions of the Gods, Indra’s son Jayant took off in the sky carrying the Amrit Kalash.
At that time demon guru Shukracharya ordered the demons to chase Jayant to take back the nectar. The demons did the same and caught Jayant on the way. The war continued for 12 days between both sides to gain control over the Amrit Kalash.
During this war, some drops of nectar fell at four places on earth – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik and at the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, due to which all of them became sacred. Since then, bathing at these places on the day of Phalgun Amavasya is considered auspicious.
