You know that the four rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada and Saraswati in India are the best and sacred. Among these, there is no river on this planet as sacred as the Ganga.
It is said that in ancient times, Narmada performed penance for Lord Brahma for many years. Brahmaji was very pleased with this penance.
Pleased, Brahma asked Narmadaji to ask for a boon. Then Narmadaji said, Lord! If you are pleased with me then make me pure and pure like Gangaji. That means make me like Gangaji.
Brahmaji smilingly told Narmadaji that. O Goddess Narmadaji, can any other god be equal to Lord Shiva? Can any other man in all the worlds be like Lord Vishnu?

Hearing the talk of Brahmaji, Narmada went to Kashi after sacrificing her boon and started meditating there by establishing a Shivalinga at Pilpilathirtha.
Lord Shiva was very pleased with this penance. Shiva asked Narmadaji to ask for a boon. Then Narmada said- Lord! What is the use of asking for a small blessing? May my devotion remain at your feet. I don’t need anything except your grace.
Lord Shankar was very happy to hear word of Narmada. Lord Shiva saw that Narmada had performed unique devotion without any greed. Lord Shiva gave a unique boon to Narmada ji.
Shiva said- Narmade! With my blessings, all the stones on your shore will become Shivalingas. By taking bath in Ganga, sins are soon destroyed.
Bathing in Yamunaji for seven days and Saraswatiji for three days destroys all sins. But just by seeing you (Narmada) all sins will be destroyed.
Narmadeshwar Shivling is Swayambhu Shivaling
The Narmadeshwar shivaling you have established will be a virtue and a salvation. Lord Shankar merged into the same Shivalinga.
Narmadeshwar Shivling will not require any life consecration. Because because of my boon it will itself take the form of Shivalinga. Due to which it will also be known as Swayambhu Shivaling.
