Women Reservation Bill– The number of women MPs in the present Lok Sabha is only 82. In this amendment, a provision has been made to implement women’s reservation only for 15 years. But in the future, Parliament can also extend this period.
The Central Government on Tuesday introduced the historic ‘Narishakti Vandan Bill’ in the Lok Sabha related to providing one-third reservation to women in the Lower House of Parliament, State Assemblies and Delhi Assembly.
The Women Reservation Bill states that reservation will be effective only after the publication of the next census and the subsequent delimitation process. In such a situation.
The possibility of its implementation before the 2024 elections is next to nothing. This also means that even if the bill is passed. But it cannot be enacted until elections are held in 2029.
In the Lok Sabha, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the 128th constitutional amendment ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Bill-2023’ related to women’s reservation.
This is the first bill to be introduced in the new Parliament House in the special session of Parliament. The government said that the purpose of this constitutional amendment bill is related to women’s reservation. This is increase the participation of women in policy making at the national and state level.
Currently, the provision of reservation has been made in the bill for 15 years and the Parliament will have the right to extend it.

Reservation for SC and ST in Women Reservation Bill
The census was scheduled to be conducted in 2021, but it was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since general elections are to be held in 2024, the next census in India may not be held until the end of next year.
The bill includes reservation for women belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). However, there is no mention of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in it.
The draft bill says that “as far as possible”, one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be filled through direct elections. Of the reserved seats, “as far as possible” one-third will be for SCs and STs.

While presenting the bill, Meghwal said that this is a bill related to women empowerment. And after it becomes law. The number of women members in the 543-member Lok Sabha will increase from the current 82 to 181. He said that after its passing. 33 percent seats will be reserved for women in the assemblies also.
