India got geopolitical shock due to Pro-China Mohamad Muizzu

Muizzu’s victory in the Maldives presidential elections is being considered a blow to New Delhi. In the second round of elections held on Saturday.

Pro-China Mohamed Muizzu defeated President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih, who is considered close to India. Muizzu and his party People’s Congress are openly supporters of China.

Muizzu was continuously accusing Solih, who became the President in 2018, that he has given a free hand to India in the country. For the past year, Mayor of the capital Male, Muizzu, had been waging a campaign of “India Out”.

Whereas Solih kept saying that the Indian Army is deployed in Maldives only to build a dockyard. The dockyard is being built with the agreement of the governments of two countries. And it does not violate the sovereignty of Maldives.

Before Solih, Abdulla Yameen, who was the President of Maldives from 2013 to 2018, is also considered close to China. During the tenure of People’s National Congress leader Yameen.

Maldives became a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Under this campaign, China is building ports, rail networks and highways in Asia, Africa and Europe. During his presidential tenure, Yameen was also accused of corruption and was sentenced to jail.

Now Muizzu, who is said to be Yameen’s political disciple, is going to take power. Before Muiz took office on November 17, Yameen was taken out of jail and shifted to house arrest.

Why is Maldives important?

Made up of 1,200 islands, the Maldives are south of India in the Indian Ocean. An important world shipping route passes close to these islands like a steep ridge.

It is the main shipping route connecting East and West. This geographical location also makes Maldives, which is considered a tourist destination, very important strategically.

India and China have spent millions of dollars in Maldives to keep the Indian Ocean under their control. Through this amount, New Delhi and Beijing want to win the hearts of the people of Maldives.

The biggest election issue in Maldives right now is foreign debt. A country with a GDP of Rs 6.1 billion has a debt of 113 per cent of the GDP.
