The contract is set to facilitate the development and construction of a new generation of attack submarines as part of the UK’s participation in the trilateral AUKUS Security (AUKUS Nuclear Submarines) Agreement.

The new submarines, known as SSN-AUKUS, will be the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy.

Purpose behind AUKUS

AUKUS will involve development work until 2028, enabling BAE Systems to begin the detailed design phase of the submarine program and begin procurement of long-term items.

BAE Systems chief executive Charles Woodburn said: “This contract strengthens the Government’s support for our UK submarine business. Allows us to mature the design and invest in critical skills and infrastructure.

The primary focus of this effort is to build a fleet of state-of-the-art hunter submarines under AUKUS. Britain’s Defense Minister Grant Shapps said that these submarines will strengthen the Royal Navy.
