When is Jitiya Vrat 2023?
According to Hindu Panchangam, this year Ashwin Krishna Ashtami Tithi is going to start on 6th October 2023, Friday at 06:34 AM. The validity of this date is till 08:08 am on Saturday, October 7, 2023. In such a situation, Jitiya Vrat will be observed on 7th October.

Preparation before Jitiya Vrat
Mothers who have to observe Jitiya fast. One day during the fast, they wash their mouth with a toothbrush made of mango, neem or bamboo.
Then after taking bath, remember the Gandharva king Jimutvahana to help you completely in the fast to be observed tomorrow.
So that there is no loss or damage of any kind during the fast. And if you commit any mistake during the fast, ask for forgiveness beforehand so that he can forgive.
Then eat complete satvik food with gourd, pumpkin or other green vegetables. After that get involved in all the preparations for the fast.
In this, Jitiya should buy all the ingredients for the fast or bring it from somewhere and collect it. Flowers, milk and doob are to be taken only on the day of puja.
Apart from this, you can arrange other puja materials like coconut, incense, oil, Akshat, vermilion, sandalwood, cotton etc.

- On the day of Jitiya Vrat, in the morning, after taking bath etc., resolve to do Jitiya Vrat and puja.
- You have to observe this Nirjala fast. For this, you should invoke your favorite deity so that he supports you during the entire fast.
- During the puja time, install the idol of Jimutavahana made of Kush in a vessel filled with water.
- After this, worship Jimutvahan with Akshat, flowers, garland, mustard oil, khalli, bamboo leaves, incense, lamp etc.
- Offer red and yellow colored cotton to Jimutvahan Ji.
- Then make idols of a female eagle and a female jackal made of clay and cow dung.
- Now offer vermilion, kerava, cucumber, curd and bangles on these idols.
- After that, listen carefully to the story of Jitiya Vrat and tell its glory.
- Pray for the safety and happy life of your child.
- Sung their traditional folk songs. Which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
- Then get up from the puja and take some rest.
- Even in the evening, you should come to the place of worship and worship.
- Then the next day, after bathing etc., complete the fast by doing Parana with milk.
Legend of Jitiya Vrat
The story of this fast is related to Jimutvahan. Gandharvaraj Jimutvahan was a very religious and sacrificial man. So he left his kingdom and went to the forest to serve his father. Once he met Nagamata while roaming in the forest.
Nagamata was doing vivaap. When Jimutavahana asked the reason for their mourning, they told that the Naga dynasty was very upset with Garuda.
To protect the lineage, the Nagavansh has made a pact with Garuda. According to the agreement, they will give him a snake to eat every day and in return he will not hunt us collectively.
He further told that in this process today his son has to go in front of Garuda. After listening to Nagmata’s entire story, Jimutavahana promised her that he would not let anything happen to her son.
Instead, you will wrap yourself in a cloth and lie down on that rock in front of Garuda. Jimutvahana himself wrapped himself in a cloth and slept at the place from where Garuda collects his food.
Garuda held Jimutavahana in his claws and flew towards the mountain. When Garuda saw that the snake was not shouting as usual and no sound was coming from it.
Garuda removed the cloth. In such a situation, he found Jimutavahana in front of him. Garuda was stunned.
Then Jimutavahana told the whole story to Garuda. He narrated the pain of every mother’s pain. Garuda started regretting his actions.
After which he respectfully left Jimutvahana. Also apologized to him. And took a vow that from today onwards he would not make snakes his prey for food.
