According to Linga Purana
It has been said in Linga Purana regarding the worship of Lord Ganesha. Since Ganesha destroys all kinds of obstacles, he is worshiped first. According to Linga Purana, the gods once asked for a boon from Lord Shiva to create obstacles in the evil deeds of the demons.
Accepting the request of the gods, Lord Shiva satisfied them by granting a boon for this. When the time came, Lord Ganesha appeared and the gods worshiped him. After that Lord Shiva ordered Ganesha to create obstacles in the evil deeds of the demons.
Therefore, in every auspicious work and worship, Lord Ganesha. The remover of obstacles, is worshiped to avoid the obstacles of negative powers. According to Maharishi Panini, the lords of the directions i.e. the group of Ashtavasus are called Gana, whose lord is Ganesha. That is why he is called Ganapati.

According to other legends
Another mythological story regarding the first worship of Ganesh Ji is also very popular. Once there was a dispute among the gods regarding who would be worshiped first on earth.
All the gods started declaring themselves superior to each other. In case of an increasing dispute, Devarshi Narad advised all the gods to take refuge in Lord Shiva.
Following the advice of Narada Muni, all the gods approached Lord Shiva and requested him to solve the problem. Shiva decided to organize a competition to resolve this serious dispute.
He asked all the Gods to circumambulate the entire universe sitting on their respective vehicles and told that whoever circumambulates the universe and reaches him first will be worshiped first on earth.

As soon as Lord Shiva’s permission was given, all the gods set out to circumambulate the universe on their respective vehicles. But Ganesh ji did not ride on his vehicle Mushak, rather after all the gods left. Instead of circumambulating the universe, he went to his mother-in-law.
Started circling around his father. He circled around the parents a total of seven times and stood with folded hands. When all the gods returned to Lord Shiva after circling the universe, they found Ganesha standing there.
Now it was the turn of Lord Shiva to declare the winner of the competition. When Shiva declared Ganesha the winner of the competition. All the gods were astonished that they had come after circling the entire universe.
While Ganesha was standing here, then why did Shiva declare him the winner? Satisfying the curiosity of all the gods. Lord Shiva then told that the place of parents is supreme in the entire universe and since Ganesha has revolved around his parents.
He is the first to be worshiped among all the gods. Agreeing with Lord Shiva’s logic. All the gods accepted his decision. It is believed that from then onwards Lord Ganesha was first worshiped on earth.
