iPhone users to get 5G only from December, full upgrade on Samsung by mid-November

NEW DELHI: If you have an Apple iPhone and want to latch on to a 5G network in cities where the high-speed service is available, be prepared to wait till the beginning of December.
For Korean Samsungwhile 5G may be enabled across some of the top devices such as the Fold4, Galaxy S22 and A33, the entire device eco-system will be enabled only by mid-November.
The most prepared currently from the smartphone point of view are the Chinese brands Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, all of whom have enabled 5G on most of their compatible devices, or are sending software updates that help upgrade it over the air (OTA).
Muralikrishnan B, president of Xiaomi India said the company is “completely aligned with the government’s vision of propelling 5G adoption” and will provide relevant support to ensure 5G readiness.
“Currently, 100% of our 5G models support the non-standalone (NSA) network out of the box, wherein users can choose ‘Prefer 5G’ in network settings to connect to the 5G network. Whereas, for seamless SA support, we have already started rolling out the FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air) updates to select devices,” the Xiaomi president said.
Concerned over the supposed slow pace in launching 5G services, the government on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with representatives of telecom companies such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, apart from top smartphone makers.
The government – which was represented by top officials from the telecom and IT & Electronics ministries — wanted to find out the reasons that were leading to delays in 5G consumer services, despite companies such as Airtel announcing a launch across eight cities on October 1 at the India Mobile Congress where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present.
In a statement, Apple said, “We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December.”
Apple’s models which that will be upgradable to 5G would be iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and iPhone SE (3rd generation).
Samsung also said that work is on for network testing and validation before all the 5G models are enabled. “Samsung has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009 and took the leading role in standardizing 5G technology globally. In India, Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices. We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by mid-November 2022, enabling Indian consumers to experience 5G seamlessly,” said a Samsung India spokesperson.
For OnePlus, models such as 8, 8T, 8pro, Nord2, and 9R are yet to receive 5G upgrades, though others such as Nord, 9, 9pro, 10 PRO, 10R and 10T are upgraded, as per the list of smartphones that Airtel has updated on its website.
On the operator side, Airtel and Jio said that they are upgrading their networks and mobile towers with 5G equipment as they expand the coverage within cities, and also across the country. Both are not charging any premium for the upgrade, and continue to offer 5G at the current 4G tariffs wherever the services are available.
Airtel has said that it has launched 5G in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Nagpur and Varanasi, while Jio has started Beta testing in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi.
