India’s ranking improved to number eight in the climate protection list

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) India has moved up two places to rank eighth among 63 countries in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2023, thanks to its low emissions and ever-increasing use of renewable energy. .

Three NGOs working in the field of environment released this report on Monday. These three organizations monitor the climate related performance of the European Union and 59 countries. These countries account for 92 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

This ranking by Germanwatch, the New Climate Institute and the Climate Action Network is based on how countries are progressing towards halving their emissions by 2030 and halting dangerous climate change, and what they are doing.

Efforts to halve emissions include sticking to the 1.5°C target and halting dangerous climate change.

The CCPI has been published since 2005 and aims to increase transparency in international climate politics. It also helps in comparison on decades of climate protection efforts and progress.

The report left the first three spots blank because “no country has performed well enough in all categories of the index to be awarded an overall good rating.” It ranked Denmark fourth, Sweden fifth, and Chile sixth. placed on

India received good ratings in the greenhouse gas emissions and energy use categories, while it received moderate ratings in the climate policy and renewable energy segments.

China, the world’s biggest polluter, dropped 13 places to 51st and received a poor rating because of plans for new coal-fired power plants. America has climbed three places to number 52.

The report says India is “on track” to meet its 2030 emissions targets that adapt to a below 2 degree Celsius scenario. “But its renewable energy path is not on track for the 2030 targets,” she said.
