Iga Sviatake crowned at US Open 2022, defeats Jabur to win third Grand Slam title

New Delhi. Poland’s 21-year-old player Inga Swiatek has won the title of US Open 2022. In the final, world number one Sviatake defeated Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabur 6-2, 7-6 in straight sets. This is Sviatake’s third career Grand Slam title. Sviatec has won the French Open twice before the US Open. The 28-year-old Jabur, seeded 5th, was the first African player to reach the final of the US Open in the professional era that began in 1968. After Wimbledon, she also missed out on winning the US Open title.

“I didn’t expect more, especially the challenging times I had to go through before this tournament,” Swiatake said after defeating world number five Jabur. This tournament was challenging because it is New York. There is a lot of noise here. I am really proud of myself that I was able to deal with these things mentally.

Like Jabur, Sviatek also came here with a sports psychologist. After winning the first set easily, Sviatec had the first championship point at 6-5 in the second set. Before Jabur’s serve, Swiatec changed the racket which seemed strange at this point. When the game started, Sviatake missed the backhand and could not recover from it. Jabur saved his serve and dragged the set to the tie breaker.

Tunisia player Jabur was at one point leading 5-4 in the tie-breaker. Sviatec made a tremendous comeback after this and became the champion by winning the last three points. Sviatec received a gleaming trophy and a check for $2.6 million on this victory. On this Swiatek jokingly said, “I am really glad that it is not cash.” The 21-year-old player from Poland also won the French Open title in June this year. She is the first female player since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win two Grand Slam titles in a single season.

Jabur said, “I actually put in a lot of effort from my side but Sviatec didn’t let it make it easy for me. She was really a contender for victory today.” Jabur may have lost in the final but it will take the 28-year-old to the second spot in the world rankings.
