New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) Around 39 per cent of MGNREGA cardholder households did not get even a day’s work during the 2020-21 pandemic pandemic. This has been told in a survey.

Azim Premji University has surveyed 2,000 families in eight blocks across four states. The survey was conducted in collaboration with ‘National Consortium of Civil Society Organizations on NREGA’ and ‘Collaborative Research and Dissemination’.

It was told that on an average only 36 percent of the families who worked have received their payment within 15 days. The survey was conducted in Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in November-December 2021.

The report said, “39 percent of the employment card holder households in all the blocks who were willing to work under MGNREGA during the year affected by the Kovid and wanted an average of 77 days of work but did not get a single day’s work.” ‘

According to the survey, despite many loopholes, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act proved to be helpful during the pandemic and due to this many families facing crisis were saved from acute shortage of income.

Rajendran Narayanan, a co-author of the research and a faculty member at Azim Premji University, said, “Our research showed how much workers value the utility and need of MGNREGA. More than eight out of ten families said that 100 days of employment per person per year should be provided under MGNREGA.
